I decided to skip a large section of highway and get on a bus to Pucon from Valparaiso.
Pucon is a swank resort-like town, with a crystal lake and the volcano Villarrica rising up in the distance. Villarrica volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in Chile and also one of the most climbed. I did not climb it but rode my bike to the ski resort at the base on new years day.
While in Pucon I made the decision to take the ferry from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales. A roughly 1500km boat trip through the western fjords of Patagonia, I had more than a week to ride to Puerto Montt which is only about 380km from Pucon. This would provide enough time to ride around the volcano on a quiet dirt road and visit some hot springs along the way. I was in Pucon for New Years and celebrated the new year with a jolly group of vagabonds from various places around the world. The host from our hostel provided a very nice BBQ and party and we enjoyed a surprisingly nice fireworks display from the lake.
